WHAT IT ACTUALLY HELPS YOU DO

Once a month, log in to Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks and fill in a few key numbers. The tracker tells you, quickly and clearly, if your trade business is OK – or if something’s wrong.

1. Check your cash.

Put in the balances of all your business bank accounts (and even your ATO account). See if there’s enough to pay wages and bills.

2. Check who owes what.

Add invoices owed to you and bills you need to pay. You want to be owed more than you owe – and not have big, ugly overdue numbers.

3. Check profit properly.

Drop in your revenue, cost of sales and expenses for the month. The Tracker calculates:

Gross margin – builders: 20–30%, other tradies: 30–40%

Net profit – target: 10% of revenue (after you get paid properly)

If the numbers are off, that’s your nudge: do something about it, don’t just keep working and hoping it sorts itself out.
